Large Black Ticks on the Back: Identification, Risks, and Removal

Large black ticks on the back can be concerning due to their appearance and
potential health risks. Ticks are parasites that feed on the blood of their hosts,
including humans, and can transmit diseases such as Lyme disease. The
most commonly encountered large, dark ticks are usually from the Ixodes
family, also known as deer ticks, which are known carriers of Lyme disease.

Ticks typically attach themselves to the skin, often going unnoticed until they
are already engorged. When removing a tick, it’s important to use fine-tipped
tweezers, grasping the tick as close to the skin’s surface as possible and
pulling it out steadily without twisting. After removal, disinfect the area and
wash your hands. If you experience any symptoms like a rash, fever, or
fatigue afterward, consult a healthcare provider as these may be signs of a
tick-borne illness.
