I’m Selling My House to Get Rid of My Stepchildren

He explained what happened:

My wife passed away in November 2022. She left me with her three adult children. Even though I’ve been in their lives for over ten years, they’ve always said that I’m not their parent. Their real dad moved to the Philippines.

The kids are 21, 22, and 25 years old. Because it’s expensive to live in our city, my wife and I let them live with us. The youngest is still in school, but the other two have jobs.

After their mom passed, they stopped helping with anything around the house. We didn’t charge them rent so they could save money, and they only had to pay for their own personal bills. I covered everything else—utilities, food for the youngest, and other expenses. But now they don’t help at all, and I’ve had to hire a cleaner. It’s really frustrating.

So, I put the house up for sale. Since the price of the house went up, I could retire to the Philippines if I wanted to. The house sold quickly, and I decided to move out to my cabin. I gave each of the kids $10,000 and told them the house was sold. They weren’t surprised because they saw the for-sale sign and knew about the open houses.

Now they’re upset, saying I’m kicking them out of their home. I get it—they grew up there, but they never treated it like much more than a place to sleep.

I believe their mom would be disappointed in how they’ve treated me and the house.

They’ve pooled their money to get an apartment, but if they rely only on the money I gave them, they’ll run out in a year.

People stood on his side.

  • “Raise your hand if your parents gave you $10k when you moved out? No hands? You separated from leeches.

  • “They were disrespectful to you and your home, and you weren’t obligated to continue providing for them, especially after they became adults.

  • “You gave them nearly two years to start picking up after themselves and acting like they wanted to live there. They didn’t. If seeing for sale signs and open houses didn’t get them to realize that that’s not really on you. You also didn’t have to give them money to be on their own, but you did.
You’ve done enough, considering that they’re adults. It sounds like if they had been picking up after themselves, you probably wouldn’t have wanted to sell.
