I Fell in Love With My Married Neighbor, but His Kids Made Me Question My Feelings

A woman wrote us a very emotional letter about a difficult situation she’s facing. She has fallen in love with her married neighbor and is unsure about what to do. She asked us to share her story to get advice. She said, “I can’t talk to my friends or family about this, so I’m reaching out for help. I’m feeling desperate, and I know you might judge me, but please try to understand my side. Thank you.”

We received a letter from a woman who wanted to stay anonymous.

This 35-year-old woman chose to remain anonymous while sharing her complicated situation. She wanted to hear what our readers thought and was ready for any judgment.

She started her letter by saying, “I’m 35, and nine months ago, I went through a painful breakup with my fiancé. I moved in with a friend and her husband, and we’re renting a house together. That’s when I met my neighbor, whom I’ll call Kevin. He helped us move in, and I immediately liked him. Since we both live in the suburbs and work in the city, we started taking the same bus every day.”

She continued, “I knew from the start that Kevin was married and had kids. He talked about them a lot and showed me pictures on his phone and Facebook. But that didn’t stop me from liking him. At first, it was just a silly crush.”

The woman said, “Kevin is really good-looking, funny, and kind. The first time we rode the bus together, he asked me about my job and my life. He actually cared about what I was saying, which my ex never did. We fought about that a lot.

Kevin does nice things for his kids, like bringing them treats and little gifts. One time, he spent the whole bus ride talking on the phone with his young daughter, comforting her before a big school presentation. Seeing how caring he was made it easy for me to imagine how great he would be with me if we were together.

She added, “I really thought Kevin and I could become something more. Not long after I started liking him, I found out that his wife went to the same school as me. That surprised me because they are so different. He’s funny and lively, while she is very serious and boring. He’s not really smart, but she is very intelligent. I couldn’t help but think their personalities didn’t match, and that Kevin might be stuck in this relationship just because he’s such a nice guy.”

The woman got emotional about what happened next. She wrote, “One evening, Kevin asked if I could babysit his kids for a few hours. I said yes right away. He explained that his wife was in the hospital far away, and he was really worried, so he wanted to go see her. Since they didn’t have family nearby, he asked me to watch the kids until a family friend could come later that night.”

That’s when things started to go wrong. She said, “Kevin’s kids were a total nightmare. He has three daughters, and the oldest was a typical bratty preteen who was very rude and didn’t respect me. She argued about everything and even muttered insults at me a few times. The middle girl was super loud and insisted on playing messy games, no matter how many times I asked her to stop. The youngest was sweet and quiet by herself, but she quickly joined in the chaos with her sisters.”

She continued, “Eventually, I gave in and played hide and seek with the younger girls. But then I ended up locked out of the house. When I went to the back door and asked the oldest girl to let me in, she acted like she didn’t hear me and just put on her headphones. Luckily, Kevin’s family friend arrived a few minutes later and let me in. After that, I went home.”

She finished her story by saying, “The whole babysitting experience really upset me. Before that, I dreamed about being a stepmom to Kevin’s kids someday. Now, I want nothing to do with those difficult kids. It also makes me think that Kevin and his wife can’t be happy together because kids from happy families wouldn’t act like that.”

The woman added, “I want to be with Kevin, but I’m not sure it can happen because I don’t get along with his kids. Plus, their mom could easily turn them against me. I truly love Kevin and believe we could have a great relationship. But what happened with his kids has shaken me. I wish I could talk to someone about this, but I feel like everyone I know would just judge me.
